The tunes on this CD were composed during a 3-week trip to Japan and the USA in June 2008. There is an obvious train theme, which I guess is all part of being on the road and in the cities that I love. The G Train (the train not the album) is a cross-town train from Queens to Brooklyn in New York City. The title track of this CD really reflects the experiences I had on some colourful late night jazz journeys on that train. The “Narita Express” is a tune based on the 4-note theme played when the train doors close on the airport to City train in Tokyo. I also feel that this tune somehow captures some of the flavour of the very hip Japanese culture in Tokyo. In addition to this there are three group improvisations created spontaneously in the studio that that represent some interesting journeys and I had to include on this CD. But not all trips are spent on mass transit. Hell’s Kitchen was inspired by the area of Manhattan around Midtown West that still represents the gritty side of the big city. The Closers is a blues number that was written after closing every bar on the upper west side of New York after a long day in the recording studio. In addition to this I wrote 3 tunes for the people at home that I love and missed - Tyner, Dahli and Angelyne. “Tyner’s Tribute” is a tribute not to the legendary Jazz pianist McCoy Tyner, but to a great laid back kid of mine who is the rock in my life and is always ready to keep me on my toes. “Dahli’s Delight” is a beautiful tune for a beautiful young girl who is growing up so quickly. “Angel” just speaks for itself!!! I am eternally thankful to my family for their endless support (especially in my younger years) that made my career in the music industry possible. In addition to this well, a huge thanks to the teams at The Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts and The Ellington Jazz Club, who I share the majority of my life with in the joyous pursuit of music.
